Field Trip Leader: Rich Reaves
Description: Rising Fawn Gardens is a private farm along Lookout Creek on the western slope of Lookout Mountain. Southern hardwood forest and open fields provide ideal habitat for a unique diversity of plants. We expect to see upwards of 50 species of flowering plants including: sweet little Betsy/radiate trillium (Trillium cuneatum/in press as T. radiatum), the Lookout Mountain trillium (in press as Trillium freemanii), lance-leaf trillium (Trillium lancifolium), Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica), dwarf larkspur (Delphinium tricorne), goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), and firepink (Silene virginica). We likely will visit three areas, with a break for lunch at the start point in the middle of the day.
Location & Directions: From Atlanta: I-75 North to Chattanooga, then take I-24 West to I-59, I 59 South to Exit 11. Take Exit 11 & turn left on GA 136 for approximately 0.3 mile. Meeting site is on the right.
Alternately, Atlanta: I-75 North to Exit 320. Take Exit 320 and turn left on GA 136. Continue on GA 136 to Trenton (there are several turns and jogs), continue on 136 to Trenton. In Trenton at the first light turn right (136 will run with US 11 for this stretch), at the next light turn left to stay on 136 toward I-75. Meeting site is on left immediately after turning left.
Meet At: The parking lot for Advance Auto Parts/Family Dollar in Trenton, GA. Address is 5408 GA-136, Trenton, GA 30752 or lat/long 34.868843, – 85.512539 in WGS 84 datum.
Bathroom Facilities: Available where we will start & eat lunch at Rising Fawn Gardens, none during the walk.
Walking Difficulty: Generally easy as we will be following an old roadbed and/or established trails. Sturdy shoes with good tread are recommended.
Bring: Lunch, snacks, water, bug spray. Remember to dress for the weather and wear comfortable hiking shoes. You may wish to bring binoculars, hand lens, notebook, and camera.
