Presentation #1: Wildflowers and Special Habitats in Northern Minnesota

Presenter: Rich Reaves

Description:  This talk will present some of the late spring/early summer flora of northern Minnesota and provide a discussion of several of the special or unusual habitats in that region.  Special habitats include the Ripley Esker, Pennington Bog, the Wawina Peatlands, and a virgin conifer forest remnant called the Lost Forty.  Plants discussed include prominent woody vegetation and the delightful wildflowers we all love including blue bead lily (Clintonia borealis), Showy lady slipper (Cypripedium reginae), wood nymph (Moneses uniflora), dragon’s mouth (Arethusa bulbosa), and many others.  An article regarding this area was published in the 2022 Tipularia, which you can review in preparation for the talk.

Presentation #2: Spring Wildflowers of Southern California Desert Regions

Presenters: Candee and Jim Drake

Description: The second part of this double header will present spring wildflowers of Southern California Desert Areas (Death Valley N.P., Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, Joshua Tree N.P. and East Mojave National Scenic Preserve.) Spring 2024 was a good year for wildflowers in these regions due to increased rainfall from 2023. Since “super” blooming in these areas is a rarity, Candee and Jim rode a long loop connecting the aforementioned locations, observing and photographing numerous blooming wildflowers along the way. You may wish to review the 2024 Tipularia article regarding the areas mentioned in the talk.
