Field Trip Leaders: Philip Bouchard and Timothy Estep
Description: Join us for a walk in the park (literally) at the North Glynn County Recreation Complex as we explore plants found in Southeast Georgia’s Flatwoods! Highlights will include: Jack in the Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum or justifiably part of the newer taxon? Unusual and rarely documented for this part of the USA). Common ditch/bog species. We expect to see at least two species of carnivorous plants (sundew and butterwort) in bloom. Discussion on Yellow Jessamine (Gelsemium sempervirens). Is the rumored Needle Palm (Rhapidophyllum hystrix) really there? A chance glimpse of Simpson’s Rain Lily (Zephyranthes simpsonii). Discussions on St. John’s Worts (Hypericum). And much more!
Meet At: 10:00AM in the parking lot near the restrooms, which is also near the large metal sculpture of a bird. Use 570 Harry Driggers Blvd, Brunswick, GA 31525 for navigational directions. May visit other nearby areas after.
Bathroom Facilities: On location.
Walking Difficulty: Often walking on a paved walking trail with brief excursions into the nearby shrubbery, also some dirt paths. Total walking distance will be under 2 miles.
Bring: Lunch, snacks, & water. Always a chance for bugs. Have sun protection on stand-by. Guide to the Vascular Plants of Florida will be useful. References to Flora of the Southeastern US (Weakley) will be referred to and referenced. Shoes may get dirty. Dress in layers so that you can adjust to changes in the temperature and your activity level. Hand lens will be very helpful.
