Name that plant contest

Welcome to the Name That Plant Contest sponsored by the Georgia Botanical Society

The person who is first, each month, to get all plants correct will receive either a patch or window decal. The person with the most correct answers for the year will win a prize, which may include, but is not limited to, a window decal, patch, a free one-year Georgia Botanical Society Membership, or other prize.

Rules:

  • Only one guess per person will be allowed.
  • Only scientific names will be accepted (no common names).
  • Older synonyms will be accepted.

Note: There was no contest in Jan. and Feb. 2025 due to illness. We are beginning in March with all new plants! Yes, you can use books, the internet, etc., just please keep this an individual contest, no sharing of answers. Remember, only scientific names will be accepted, no common names. Plant #1 (identify to species) — Habitat: Rich forests, woodlands, and rock outcrops (primarily calcareous or mafic), especially with nutrient-rich seepage. Late Mar-early Jun.
Range: MD and PA west to s. WI, se. MN, IA, and OK, south to sc. SC, n. GA, n. FL, AL, and TX.
 

 

 

 

Plant #2 (identify to species) — Habitat: Rich, deciduous forests, most typically over calcareous or mafic rocks. Apr-Jun.
Range: NB and QC west to MN, south to GA and AR.
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Plant #3 (identify to species) — Habitat: Moist rich woods. Mar-Apr.
Range: C. KY south to w. NC, nw. SC, w. GA, Panhandle FL, AL, MS, and e. LA.
